On last night's Food Network episode of "Restaurant: Impossible," Robert Irvine went to Rock Island, Ill. to help save a restaurant named Goombazz Big City Eatzz in this episode titled, “Goombazz Gone Wild.”
Robert came to Rock Island to help couple, Brenda Brewer and Sally Fatzz, who specialize in Big-City foods, from big cities across the country using the authentic foods and original recipes. Brenda cashed out her 401k and one year later; they are $300,000 in debt. So Robert was called in to help. Their general manager recently walked out due to Sal’s Sicilian temper.
When Robert walked in, he was not impressed. Robert was confused by the name and when he quizzed the owners, he was more confused. So Robert observed a service. The customers were confused with the décor, the menu, and the color scheme of the place. The food was unsatisfactory to the customers, who probably would not return.
Robert ordered several menu items, and was completely disgusted with the array of food and the quality of it. Brenda stated that she wanted something different than what Sal wanted. Robert said the two “Zs” in the name represented snoozing. Brenda knows the food quality is lacking and is happy that Robert came in to give it the boost it needed.
When Cheryl came in, she felt that a child designed the place and had high hopes for the redo. Robert took Brenda, Sal and the staff to a nearby park. Each person was handed a tomato they had to put in a canister denoting the biggest problem in the restaurant. The consensus was that Sal was the biggest problem in the restaurant. He was not surprised. The staff mentioned his temper and how he speaks to the help, and customers even asked how they could work there while being treated so badly?
They all were concerned about Darren, who recently left the place without management. However, Darren was not given enough responsibility to properly do his job because of Sal. When Robert asked how many people wanted Darren back, mostly all hands went up. They were thankful that they finally could voice their opinion, because most were afraid to confront Sal.
Robert gave Brenda and Sal an assignment; go see Darren and find out if he would consider coming back. Brenda knows that Sal has to change, and his first change was to go to Darren’s house to apologize.
On the second day, Robert returned to find Brenda and Sal to see whether Darren will return. He promised to give them an answer this morning, but never answered his phone. Because the onus is on Brenda financially and managerially, she is the one to make the final decision.
Robert met Brenda, Sal and Victor, the cook and revamped the menu. Then they performed a test with the staff blindfolded. As Brenda and Sal each directed their groups to make a pizza, each directed them in a professional manner. When the task was completed, Sal told the entire group how much he appreciated them and what great workers they were. There were tears in their eyes, as they had never heard this before.
As the couple anxiously waited to see the new restaurant, Robert took them inside. As they opened their eyes, they were astounded by the new interior. Robert brought in Tom and Cheryl, who did a superb job on the makeover. When the couple went outside and invited everyone in, the place was jumping and Sal saw a look in Brenda’s face that has long since disappeared.
Thanks to Robert and his crew of "Restaurant: Impossible." this restaurant and couple have better communication and a brighter future.
