Response from city council concerning Ordinance 2012-296

You may recall that over the summer, Jacksonville Florida was confronted with a city ordinance that had many citizens in JAX, taking sides for and against a bill that was to be passed. The issues from Ordinance 2012 – 296 can be read Here.

Below is a response from City Councilman, Clay Yarborough, to let the petition signers know the official outcome of Ordinance 2012-296:

Thank you for your email regarding Ordinance 2012-296.

From the time the legislation was introduced in May 2012 until it was acted upon in August 2012, the Jacksonville City Council received nearly 10,000 emails and hundreds of phone calls related to it, so it has taken some time to respond. The percentage I personally received from those opposed to the measure was approximately 75%. As I am sure you know by now, the Council voted on August 15, 2012, to deny the ordinance. When a substitute (amended) version of the bill that was deemed to be more palatable to Council Members was considered first, it failed by a vote of 9-10, which then triggered a failing vote of 2-17 on the main bill without the amendment. The initial vote was very significant and I am convinced the Lord moved in the hearts of the Members to vote accordingly. We have much to be thankful for and should pray now for strength for when/if this issue resurfaces.

May our Lord Jesus Christ receive all of the glory and honor through the Council's action.

Clay Yarborough
Councilman, District 1
Jacksonville City Council
