Resource officer accidentally discharges gun in school hallway

A resource officer at Highland High School in Highland N.Y. accidentally discharged his gun in the hallway of the school. USA Today reported on March 6, 2013, that an investigation into the incident is underway. The officer is under suspension until the investigation is complete.

Gun fire at school

At 1:38 p.m. on Tuesday, March 5, Officer Sean McCutcheon accidentally discharged his gun in the hallway of Highland High School. No one was injured and parents were notified by phone about the incident. The gun was a Glock .45-caliber pistol.

McCutcheon is the only resource officer for the Highland Central School District. His time is split between three schools. Highland schools decided to employ a resource officer after the shooting incident that occurred in Sandy Hook, Conn.

Suspended

Sean McCutcheon is under suspension until the police department completes their investigation into the incident. It is not known why McCutcheon’s gun discharged.

The Highland Central School District is placing the school resource officer program on hold until further notice.
