Resource Connection held last night in Williamson County

The Parks and Recreation Department of Williamson County hosted the Williamson County Student Support Services, Resource Connection Tuesday night. This annual event allows parents and their adolescent or young adult son or daughter exiting high school an opportunity to network with businesses and agencies who provide services to individuals with disabilities.

The Student Support Services Department of Williamson County Schools offers a Community Based Transition Program staffed by teachers, support staff and job coaches employed by Williamson County. Transition services comply with Federal mandates which require schools to prepare students for a productive and high standard of life after leaving school. Training and work experience is provided to help students prepare to be as independent as possible.

The Community Based Transition Program prepares the student for the future. Tennessee state law allows students with disabilities to be served in the public school system through their 22nd birthday. By providing a safe and supported environment that allows the student an opportunity to explore the work setting, Students spend four years of high school in inclusive classrooms and four years focusing on transitioning into the community where they will work and live.

Some of the 40 exhibitors in last nights event included the Down Syndrome Association of Middle Tennessee, The ARC of Williamson County, Next Step at Vanderbilt, Special Olympics of Williamson County, the Autism Society of Middle Tennessee, and the Parks and Recreation Department of Williamson County.
