Resolve to clear out the clutter in the new year

Have you resolved to clear out the clutter and be more organized in the New Year? Tampa Fashion and Beauty Examiner, Kelly Machbitz, shows us unique ways to organize cosmetics and beauty products.

If you are a cosmetic junkie like me, you’re always bringing home new products…add those to your long time favorites, and over time your vanity or cosmetic drawer is overflowing. And if you can’t see what you have, chances are you won’t use it. Now you have all these great products that are going to waste, expiring, or you wind up spending more money buying duplicates that you really didn’t need.

Here are a few creative ways to clear the clutter so you can see what you have and access it easily:

1. Re-purpose a straw dispenser to store brushes

Place makeup brushes in a straw dispenser to keep them dust free. An added bonus: by standing brushes upright you prevent the bristles from breaking and won’t have to replace them as often. Find them at kitchen supply stores for around $10. Check local flea markets and thrift stores and you may find one second hand for much less.

2. Pretty polish organizing tips

If you love to do mannies and pedis at home, or change your polish frequently like me, you probably have a whole collection of colors. If you store them away in a drawer, you have to pick up each bottle one at a time to see the color. A simple fix is to buy a sheet of labels (stickers) from your local office supply store for around $2 and paint each polish on one. Once dry, attach the stickers to the top of the appropriate bottles and now you will see all your colors at a glance.

Another great option for nail polish organization is storing bottles on a cake stand or Lazy Susan (also from the kitchen supply store). This allows you to display nail polish in a pretty and easy-to-access way. Simply turn the stand to see all the colors.

3. Recycle picture frames to organize perfumes and cosmetics

If you like to display your perfumes or cosmetic products on your counter top, try recycling an old picture frame. I found several attractive frames at a local thrift store for just a few dollars. I replaced the picture with a piece of pretty fabric (or you can use an old scarf, wallpaper, etc.), now I have a decorative tray I love to show off.

If you have limited counter space and like to keep your makeup instantly accessible, use the same picture frame idea and expand on it. Purchase Velcro dots from the hardware store, attach one side to the back of each product, the other side to the glass, then press them together. Now you can hang your current color collection on the wall and just grab what you need as you need it. The Velcro makes it easy to swap out colors and products throughout the year.

4. Tame styling tools with pvc

Hairstyling tools can take up a lot of space on the vanity. To tame them all and free up space, purchase small pieces of pvc pipe (approximately 6 inches long) from the hardware store and attach to cabinet doors with screws or industrial strength Velcro. Tuck the end of each appliance into one pipe, and place the cord in another to keep everything organized. The pvc wont melt, so you won’t have to wait for them your styling tools to cool completely before storing away.

Take a few minutes now to organize and you’ll save yourself a ton of time and money down the road.
