Resident Evil 5 cover.
The first DLC for Resident Evil 5 was a target for hate and disgust for many fans of the game. This is because the new versus mode was announced just before the game even launched. Not to mention that there were big fallout when it was revealed that the DLC served as nothing more than unlock keys for content that was already in the game.
So even with all the baggage, is Resident Evil 5 versus mode worth 400 Microsoft Points on the Xbox 360 or $4.99 on the Playstation 3? The short answer is no.
Versus mode is essentially a modified Mercenaries mode for three or more players. Instead of cooperating, versus is all about competitive play. For $4.99 you will get Slayers and Survivor. The Slayers mode is basically Mercenaries except you are competing with other players for points. Survivor is where you have to take out other players. You can either play the modes as a 2 vs. 2 or free-for-all match.
While Slayers is the better of the two, it is just Mercenaries mode with four players competing. The experience is only slightly different and definitely not worth the extra price tag. Furthermore, Survivor does not work well due to the clunky nature of Resident Evil 5. Having to stop and shoot a moving target is not fun.
The problems did not end there either. For unspeakable reasons, you can’t play spilt-screen with another person in versus. The characters are also horribly unbalanced.
Resident Evil 5 may be a great game but the extra versus mode isn’t worth spending the extra $4.99 or Microsoft Points on.
