If warring with winter weight gain has become weary, the results of a new study may perk you up. Researchers discovered that green tea, combined with exercise, can boost your weight loss by 27 percent and your abdominal fat by 36 percent, reported Philadelphia magazine on April 3.

Researchers discovered that lab animals who exercised and consumed green tea extract experienced the most weight loss. The amount of green tea needed is equal to eight to 10 cups per day for humans.

As to the question whether the results are valid for humans, the lead researcher for the study said yes.

"I think we can make that leap. When we put together our animal model experiments, we try to mimic the human situation as much as possible," explained Joshua Lambert, whose study was published in the journal Molecular Nutrition Food Research.

In addition to weight loss, green tea reduced LDL "bad" cholesterol in a recent study reported by WebMD. In that study, one group sipped a bottle of oolong tea fortified with green tea extract containing 690 milligrams of catechins while the other drank a daily dose of oolong tea with 22 milligrams of catechins.

Although both groups consumed the same amounts of calories and fat, the men who received the green tea extract beverages benefited in four ways:

  • More weight loss
  • Lower BMI
  • Slimmer waistlines
  • Increased reduction in body fat
