When Christi Smith rescued Tater Tot, a 10 month old pit bull who was hours away from being euthanized at the Minneapolis Animal Care and Control, her intention was to foster the dog and find a suitable home for him. But within days, her four year old son Peyton Anderson and Tater Tot formed a close bond and have been inseparable. Then less than a week later, Tater Tot did something so amazing that even the anti-pit bull advocates cannot ignore. He saved the life of his new friend Peyton.
Unbeknownst to Christi, her son’s blood sugar dropped to a life threatening level. Fortunately, Tater Tot’s behavior alerted her to Peyton’s condition.
He kept on whining and barking and running between the two of us. I checked on him and he was barely breathing. –Christi Smith
After rushing him to the emergency room, doctors discovered his blood sugar was “dangerously low”. Isis Sanchez, of the Blue Pearl Veterinary Clinic, said that Tater Tot’s keen sense of smell likely picked up on the changes going on in the boy’s body.
Pit bulls are notorious for being killers. According to DogsBite.org, these dogs accounted for the majority of all dog bite related fatalities. In addition, this site believes that pit bulls are innately dangerous and pose a severe public health risk even.
However, if this was the case for the breed, how do they explain what Tater Tot did? If all Pit Bulls were vicious predators, wouldn’t it have been reasonable for the dog to attack the weak child?
This wonderful story is an example of how any dog can become a hero, even if it is a Pit Bull. It is also a perfect case in favor of adopting an animal at a local shelter. As for Tater Tot, Christi Smith said that he has “become family for good.”
