Rescue dog overcomes amputation to train for therapy dog

Late last year, a representative from Pit Sisters Rescue, a Jacksonville-based rescue, was walking down the isles of a local animal shelter when they saw a Tia, a pitiful little girl sitting in her cage.  She was found as a stray and had apparently been hit by a car.  She had injuries all over her body, and her front leg appeared to be broken, yet her tail was still wagging.  They decided to rescue this little girl and get her to a veterinarian for care.

At the veterinarian, several tests were run, and the decision was made to amputate Tia's front leg so that she would no longer be in pain.  The amputation required Tia to remain at the vet overnight.  It was when Tia was picked up from the vet's office the following day that everyone realized what a special girl she is.  She was allowed to be the office dog for the day as her personality was amazing and she got along with everyone, including the office pig.

Tia's recovery from her amputation was amazing and her spirit was never broken.  She had the perfect temperament to become a therapy dog, so her journey began.  She was placed in a foster home with children, other dogs, a cat, and an amazing foster dad who has a gift for training dogs.  Tia was then enrolled in her first training class at the Jacksonville Humane Society.  Even though Tia was missing her front leg, she did not let that stop her.  She demonstrated her drive and her intelligence, and was the star of the class.

Tia is now enrolled in Canine Good Citizen class, and will go on to therapy dog training once she completes her CGC certification.  The goal is for Tia to do therapy work with amputees.  Tia is available for adoption and is a very special girl.  For additional information on Tia, please visit www.pitsisters.org.
