In December of last year, Rilind was extremely close to death. He had been dumped over a fence at a local animal shelter. He was severely emaciated, covered in feces and fleas, and could barely walk. His rescuers could not believe their eyes. Through tears, they prayed that he would live as they transported him for emergency veterinary care. When he arrived at the vet, he received a life-saving blood transfusion from another rescue dog who happened to be at the same vet.
Rilind means rebirth, and rebirth is exactly what Rilind experienced. He was diagnosed with Exocrine Pancreatic Insufficiency (EPI). In EPI, the pancreas is missing enzymes which allow nutrients to be absorbed. The treatment is a special enzyme powder that is sprinkled on every meal, strict monitoring of the diet, weekly vet visits, and bi-weekly B-12 injections. In addition to EPI, Rilind also tested positive for heartworms.
Since his rescue, Rilind has gained 30 pounds, and has gained an international following through his Facebook page, Rilind Reborn. His Facebook page has documented his progress in pictures from the first day he was rescued, and has come to be a source of happiness and inspiration for people all over the world. Every day, Rilind appears in different attire, including an ice cream sundae outfit, a running suit, and Superman pajamas.
Rilind was entered in the Pit of the Year contest on Cesar Millan's web site, cesarsway.com. Voting ends on Thursday and Rilind is currently in the lead, but win or lose, Rilind has already won the hearts of people around the world.
