Despite cancer risks, a dark skin teenage boy just out of high school made a request to have his skin whitened as light as the late pop star Michael Jackson to make himself appear as fair as his girlfriend.
His request for the $124,000 procedure was ultimately denied.
The clinic's plastic surgeon located in in Johor Baru said although the teenager's father was a successful businessman and could thus afford to pay for the treatment, he was shocked when the boy asked for it to be carried out as soon as possible.
"The treatment requires us to use huge amounts of acid, and that will affect the patient's health and cause cancer," he said, adding that the clinic then advised the boy against the procedure because of the risks.
Ungku also pointed out that beauty treatment, slimming courses and plastic surgery had now become common among the working class.
However, he urged those wanting to undergo such treatments to ensure that the clinics they frequent were registered and licensed by the Health Ministry.
