All the pundits on the major news networks and even on political blogs fail to grasp that there is nothing crazy involved in Republicans repeated attempts to pull the government down. How quickly everyone forgets the lessons of Naomi Klein's Shock Doctrine. This whole Republican plan is a carefully orchestrated corporate Coup D'Etat and American democracy is the intended victim.
For those who have forgotten Milton Friedman's evil pronouncement about crisis, whether natural or contrived, providing an excellent opportunity to put in place radical policies that would never be put in place under normal circumstances, let me remind you that this statement was made right after Hurricane Katrina resulting in the privatizing of New Orleans schools while no one was looking. The rest of Friedman's ideas about crisis being an opportunity are that if you have plans ready to go while the populace is still in disorientation from the crisis, you can put radical policies in place and it will be too late when the Middle Class recovers from the shock to do anything about what has happened.
More graphic examples of this plan in operation are the intentionally created deficit crises in states like Wisconsin and cities like Detroit after Republicans cut taxes for the wealthy and corporations, then used the deficit they knew would be created to cut benefits for the poor, the aged, and the unemployed, because these expenditures get in the way of corporate profits and total corporate control of the reigns of political power.
Republicans don't hate government per se, only government that protects the Middle Class from exploitation by the 1%. As Harry S. Truman said, "a bureaucrat is a Democrat who holds a job a Republican wants to hold," and Big Government is government that cuts into profitability by demanding the water remain clean, the air breathable and products remain safe or that schools teach all sides of an issue not just the Right Wing version of truth.
Truman also wryly noted that efficient government is a dictatorship and Republicans abhor democracy as they are proving with their insistence that even though they lost the last election either Democrats enable Republican goals, such as repealing Obamacare, and putting Paul Ryan's tax proposals in place, or they will shut down government and possibly, also intentionally, cause America to default on its already owed debts, by failing to raise the debt ceiling.
It wouldn't surprise me one bit to find that Koch Brothers money is behind the planning of this latest intentional plan to totally circumvent the election of 2012 and finally rid themselves of meddlesome elections where Middle Class desires get in the way of complete control of economics, profitability, and political power.
While some pundits believe the whole gambit is being done because they believe Obama will cave in and give them what they want, I think this plan is much more sinister than that. I believe they hope he won't cave and the government shutdown and debt ceiling debacle will collapse government because that could cause economic and political turmoil that might finally enable the 1% to effectively remove the American Middle Class from participation in the electoral process in any meaningful way.
When government employee's don't get paid and all those privatized contractors like those who provide NSA with services don't get paid, and seniors don't get Social Security checks, the unemployment numbers will rise to unthinkable numbers grinding the economy to a halt. In the turmoil of the moment out will come all those totalitarian bills that ALEC (American Legislative Exchange Council) has foisted on the states with Republican governors, such as Michigan and Pennsylvania, like Right to Work, voter suppression, and school privatization.
Mark my words when the government shutdown starts to happen Tuesday October 1 it is not ideological intransigence or Right Wing insanity. The Koch brothers and their ilk have secretly been planning this moment for years. This is the end game of the Shock Doctrine and the Right knows what they are doing and it is completely rational if you understand that the Founding Fathers as original members of the 1% tried after the Revolution to take democracy back from the people and only partly succeeded and have been trying to finish the job ever since.
They never wanted their indentured servants to be anything but servants let alone have the unlimited Right to Bear Arms enabling the 1% to be overthrown like they were in Bacon's Rebellion in 1676 or Americans did to the British in our American Revolution.
As we speak under Obama the role of the police like the role of the Militia after the Revolution has been changed from protecting and serving communities to protecting and serving the richest 1%.They are true descendants of Robert Filmer's defense of the Divine Right of Kings in his book Patriarcha, for which Algernon Sydney wryly noted the 1% of his time believed that, "Some men are born with crowns upon their heads and rest of us with saddles on our backs."
