A major reason for the discrepancy is that Americans were not pleased with America’s health care system prior to ObamaCare. Our health care system was the most expensive in the world yet we had far too many people without coverage. We also had the unique problem where Americans had to change their health care plans when they changed jobs. When this happened to those with pre-existing problems, they often had a hard time getting coverage.
Americans want these problems fixed, yet Republicans have no plan. In the past, Republicans advocated for and passed Health Savings Accounts. This was a start. These allowed individuals to deduct their health care policy premiums from their income taxes. This helped some, but most people pay more in FICA taxes than income taxes. When employers used part of a worker's wages to pay for health insurance premiums, a worker did not have to pay income or FICA taxes on this expense.
Newt Gingrich was a speaker at the recent Republican National Committee Meeting in Boston. He charged the attendees to ask their elected Congressional members, “What is your positive replacement for ObamaCare? They will have zero answer.” He is correct.
Even the conservative think tanks are lacking in ideas. Heritage Action is the political arm of Heritage.org. It has started a nine city tour with its President, Jim Demint. His plan is to fund the government and defund ObamaCare. He said, “Mr. President, it’s your decision whether to accept that funding or shut the government down.”
He has the right idea. Each Congress has the duty to fund only the programs that it feels are important and constitutional. However he also falls short on having a replacement plan for ObamaCare.
Georgia Representative Tom Price says he has a plan to replace ObamaCare. It is the, "Empowering Patients First Act." This is a 249 page act that repeals ObamaCare and then attempts to have the federal government fix all the problems it has caused. Conservatives should advocate for a free market solution and a free market means without government interference. This plan is no more than one more layer of government and will surely have unintended consequences.
Actually many conservative Republicans do have a replacement plan, they just do not seem to realize it. The plan is to end the income tax and the Federal Reserve Bank. For further information please go to this Examiner.com article.
