The Clear the Air Challenge kicked off with the Clear the Air Fair at the Gallivan Center in Downtown Salt Lake City on June 10, 2011. The fair was held from 6:00pm until 9:00pm and was followed by an open air showing of “How to Train Your Dragon.” About 200 people showed up for the early parts of the fair. By the time that the movie was set to begin, the open air cinema seating was full.
Several non-profits and government organizations had booths set up for fair goers. Travelwise set up a bean bag toss. Kids could also participate in a variety of other carnival-type of attractions including face painting and a bike challenge set up by Overstock.com.
The American Lung Association was there to talk about its programs for Utahns including Camp Wyatt, which is an opportunity for children who experience asthma to also be able to experience camping and other activities that they may not normally be allowed to do.
BreatheUTAH had information about particulate matter pollution. More importantly, they also were able to explain how to save money by not idling a vehicle. Idling gets zero miles to the gallon and creates pollution. Ten seconds of idling uses the same amount of gas as starting a car, so if a vehicle is going to be idling for more than ten seconds, it is better turn it off.
Entertainment was presented by Scales and Tails, B.D. Howes Band and the Folka Dots.
The Clear the Air Challenge begins on June 13, 2011 and runs for four weeks. It is designed to get people to use transportation other than single occupancy vehicles. For more information on the Clear the Air Challenge, see my article here.
