50 Shades of who? The epic novel series soon to be porno film has finally announced a cast. It's a good thing too- since most of us have (thankfully) forgotten about the books, and now have a B-list cast to look forward to.
The strategy behind casting no-names does make sense in some cases, but not when the main characters will be getting down and dirty. America wants a familiar face to hang posters in their bedrooms of. Not that those who have been cast are exactly unknown. Dakota Johnson (The Social Network, 21 Jump Street) and Charlie Hunnam (Sons of Anarchy) are slated to star in the film. While each actor has previously held much smaller roles, clearly someone at Focus Features thought this decision was a good idea. With a 2014 release date, we won't have to wait long to find out
The 50 Shades series will certainly bring these actor's names on the forefront. The questions that remain are the development of the film. Is it doomed to a NC-17 rating, or will it have an R rating with a potentially less exciting story line? The books were less than compelling, but to see how Hollywood might have a chance at making a better movie than a book will be interesting to say the least. Casting decisions aside, E.L. James has a goldmine built from repressed women everywhere. Fifty Shades of Grey has become a female cultural phenomenon, and that's what the making of this film represents.
