The San Francisco 49ers announced they have signed FB/DL Will Tukuafu on Wednesday afternoon. He was initially waived/injured last September and the team reached an injury settlement with him. As a corresponding move, the 49ers placed FB Bruce Miller on the injured reserve.
Tukuafu spent time in 2012 on both the defensive line and at the fullback position. As a fullback, he was primarily used in short yardage and goal line situations. He missed majority of the 2011 season with a wrist injury and he was on the practice squad for most of 2010 season. Tukuafu was originally an undrafted free agent out of Oregon in 2010.
Anthony Dixon is the only other reserve FB on the roster, but he is mostly used on special teams and as an extra running back when the game is in garbage time. The 49ers brought in former Stanford FB Owen Marecic for a workout earlier this week, but he chose not to sign with the team, according to the San Jose Mercury News. Marecic spent two weeks with the team in September, before being released on October 1.
Other players who could be used at the fullback position include practice squad promoted TE Derek Carrier. Defensive lineman Demarcus Dobbs has also played on offense as a tight end in the past.
