Valve's long-rumored entry into the console market looks a little more solid now as a report from a German tech site Saturday claims that a Valve engineer talked about the company's plans for the Steam Box.
The report comes from Golem.de and was translated with the help of a NeoGAF member. According to the report, Valve engineer Ben Krasnow confirmed that the Steam Box will be unveiled at GDC 2013 in March or at E3 2013 in June. Additionally, the Valve made console will forego a Windows operating system and will run on Linux.
The Linux news should come as no surprise as Valve president Gabe Newell knocked Windows 8 as "a catastrophe for everybody in the PC space." The Steam service also recently entered an open beta period while the Steam Big Picture mode exited beta.
The writing has been on the wall for a Steam-based console for a while without Valve openly saying anything. Now that we have what appears to be word from someone that works for the company, the big question is how many game developers will Valve convince to convert their titles to Steam. As of today, only 41 titles are listed in the Steam Linux section with the majority being smaller or older games.
