A middle school in Pomona, Calif. went on lockdown on the afternoon of March 29, 2013, due to a report a gunman was on the campus. According to the Contra Costa Times, the incident was determined to be a hoax.
Ryan Hightower, a spokesperson for the Pomona Unified School District, told the Times, “The report was a false one.” He added that two female students left the campus and concocted a story to tell their parents to get out of school.
The lockdown was officially lifted around 2:15 p.m. PT, according to Hightower.
The Times notes that police were initially alerted to the situation after a student went home for lunch and told her mother she saw someone at the school with a gun.
Pomona Police Lt. Ron McDonald told the publication the entire school was checked out with officers going room to room looking for the alleged gunman.
Hightower said he was unsure about what type of punishment the girls who made the claim would receive, noting district policy regarding such matters can range from detention to suspension and even possible expulsion.
