Report: Next Xbox will cost $500 or $300 with Xbox LIVE Gold subscription

New information about the next Xbox (Code-named: Durango aka Xbox 720) came out of known Microsoft insider Paul Thurrott during a podcast Friday. These latest rumors concern how much the next-gen console will cost.

"Durango is going to be expensive, you know $500, $300 for the subscription model," Thurrott said during an episode of What the Tech.

For those that don't know, Thurrott has covered tech since 1996, currently runs winsupersite.com and is a Microsoft insider who regularly gets sneak peeks at products well before they are announced.

If the next-gen Xbox does launch at $500, that will be a significant increase in cost from the Xbox 360 launch. The current-gen console was released at the $299.99 and $399.99 price points.

Microsoft introduced a subscription model for the Xbox 360 last year where consumers are able to pick up a console for $99.99 with a two year subscription to Xbox LIVE Gold at $14.99 month. It's likely that a similar model will be followed for the next Xbox but at the $299.99 starting price.

We'll have to wait and find out for sure when Microsoft announces the next Xbox during an event in May according to Thurrott.
