San Francisco 49ers WR Michael Crabtree suffered a torn Achilles tendon on Tuesday during OTAs, according to a report by the USA Today. The 49ers have not commented on the situation and Crabtree is expected to undergo further examination to confirm the injury.
Crabtree is coming off a career season where he became the go-to guy and was the leading receiver for the 49ers with 1,105 receiving yards and nine touchdowns receptions. In the postseason, he had 20 receptions for 285 yards and three touchdowns, which includes one touchdown in the Super Bowl. The 49ers attempted to throw to him three times on the team's final possession of the Super Bowl, but the Ravens ended up defending it well.
This would be a devastating blow to the team's receiving core if he is ruled out for the season. The 49ers recently picked up Anquan Boldin who is a receiver with a similar skill set to Crabtree earlier this offseason. Mario Manningham, A.J. Jenkins and Kyle Williams are behind Crabtree with fourth-round draft pick Quinton Patton. Williams and Manningham are both coming off torn ACL injuries. Completing the depth chart includes Joe Hastings, Chad Hall, 2012 practice squad member Ricardo Lockette, undrafted rookie Chuck Jacobs and Marlon Moore.
More details to come as this story develops.
