Sony has had problems keeping a steady supply of Playstation 3 consoles in stores to meet demand since Christmas. The introduction of the PS3 Slim along with a price drop last year increased demand for the console but resulted in store shelves being cleared out for the holidays. Sony has been working with retailers but admits that supply will "be tight for a bit longer." Now Sony may be in the precarious spot of having a system seller game but little in the way of systems to sell.
The LA Times is reporting that they have had problems finding PS3 consoles at local Best Buys, Gamestops, Targets, and even online stores such as Amazon.com and Walmart. My own experience in going around to local North Atlanta stores reveals the same.
"It's not ideal, I won't kid you," said Jack Tretton, president of Sony's U.S. video game division. "But I firmly believe we'll get our hardware back in stock and keep selling God of War III for a long time."
"We ultimately don't make investments on a product-by-product or month-by-month basis, but rather we invest in our platform," Tretton said. "This game will pay off for us with the people who own a PlayStation 3 and the ones who will buy one in the future."
Still, the first month of a game's release is typically the most critical time when it is sold at full price with full hype from game companies and retailers along with anticipation from gamers. However, we fully expect to see God of War III at the top of the March sales chart. But the question will remain whether or not Sony and the PS3 could have had an even bigger month with store shelves stocked properly.
