According to a new report by Celebitchy on July 9, 2012, Katie Holmes will stop the Scientology-based homeschooling instruction her daughter Suri has received and plans to send her to first grade this fall. It is unclear whether Holmes will continue homeschooling with another program, hire a private tutor, or enroll Suri in a private school. The report follows a joint statement released by Holmes and estranged husband Tom Cruise that states they are amicably working out the details of their divorce amongst themselves.
News of Holmes June 29, 2012 divorce filings sent shock waves through Hollywood as the couple has been viewed as one of Scientology’s most high-profile celebrity followers. John Travolta and wife Kelly Preston are next followed by Bodhi and Jenna Elfman. The pseudo-religion has drawn numerous criticisms from ex-members who reveal tales of brainwashing, mind control, and abuse. Several notable children who were born into the Church have left and founded their own website where they expose what they describe as the church’s abusive practices. Ex-Scientology Kids uses the tagline “I was born. I grew up. I escaped.” Reports state that Holmes did not want to expose Suri to any more Scientology teachings and has specified as such in her signed agreement with Cruise.
Those who have left Scientology state that it is a difficult process and one that might require a period of readjustment. The Leave Scientology blog highlights a number of reasons and resources for those who have made the decision to leave Scientology. Holmes was raised Catholic and confirmed in 2005 she had converted to Scientology.
It appears that Holmes is ready to make a clean break with Scientology and fortunately for her, Suri is getting out of Scientology at a young age. This does not mean that Holmes will not need emotional support after cutting ties.
As for Suri’s education, if the report is accurate, it will be one devoid of Scientology’s influence.
