An Idaho man was arrested last week after he allegedly slapped a baby on an airplane because it was crying, according to a Feb. 15, 2013 report from The Smoking Gun.
Joe Rickey Hundley, 60, was on board Delta Air Lines Flight 721o Feb. 8, when he was witnessed slapping a 19-month old toddler, calling it the N word because it wouldn’t stop crying after takeoff, according to an FBI affidavit.
The child’s mother, 33-year-old Jessica Bennett told investigators that the plane was in final descent enroute from Minneapolis, MN to Atlanta, GA when the verbal and physical assault of the toddler occurred.
Reports claim that Hundley smelled of alcohol and downed several double-vodka shots while on the flight. It is speculated that Hundley may have been drunk when he boarded the plane.
Hundley, who is employed as a business executive with Idaho aircraft parts manufacturer Unitech Composites and Structures, has been suspended from the company following the allegations. They released the following statement on their website concerning the incident:
“We understand that authorities are investigating the recent behavior of one of our business unit executives while on personal travel. The allegations are disturbing and are contradictory to our values."
“We are taking this matter seriously. In accordance with our company’s personal conduct policy, we have suspended the employee pending investigation.”
-- Al Haase, President & CEO, AGC Aerospace and Defense, Composites Group
Bennett also claims that Hundley scratched her son under the eye when he slapped the boy.
The FBI affidavit mentions that another passenger on the plane, Todd Wooten, overheard the use of the derogatory N-word and witnessed the boy’s assault. Wooten left his seat during the flight to assist Bennett during the altercation.
Hundley has been charged with simple assault and is facing as much one year in jail for slapping the toddler.
