Less than 24 hours until the 49ers play in the NFC Divisional playoffs, one assistant coach was busy today talking to another team. Defensive line coach Jim Tomsula interviewed with the Minnesota Vikings, according to Pro Football Talk.
This marks the third time a 49ers assistant has interviewed for an NFL head coaching job in the last two weeks. Defensive coordinator Vic Fangio previously interviewed with the Washington Redskins while offensive coordinator Greg Roman also talked to the Minnesota Vikings. Today is the last day a coach on a playoff team can interview with another team. If the playoff team is eliminated this weekend, discussions can continue.
Jim Harbaugh said nothing but praise to his coaching staff and he isn't worried of who could take a job elsewhere. He feels there aren't any distractions with coaches interviewing for other jobs this week.
"I know our people [and] their focus is right here on this game," Harbaugh said on Wednesday. "You know how I feel about our assistant coaches that are here. I could think of all the head jobs that are out there and those teams would be lucky to have Greg Roman or any of our other assistants."
Tomsula was the interim coach for the final game of the 2010 season with a win over the Arizona Cardinals after Mike Singletary was fired. He has been on the staff since 2007.
The 49ers will lose two coaching assistants after this season which includes Paul Wulff taking an offensive coordinator job with South Florida and OL coach Tim Drevno becoming the OL coach for the University of Southern California.
