Sanders is coming off career highs with 740 receiving yards and six touchdown receptions for the Steelers in 2013. He is also capable of being a kick returner as well as punt returner if needed.
The 49ers have had three wide receivers visit the team this week since free agency started on Tuesday. Patriots WR Julian Edelman and New York Giants WR Hakeem Nicks have both been scheduled to visit Santa Clara yesterday.
With Anquan Boldin and Michael Crabtree as the main two wide receivers under contract, the rest of the WR depth chart becomes uncertain. Quinton Patton received a limited amount of playing time in his rookie season due to a fractured foot. Sanders would be a player to plug in right away while Patton and other young players can easily develop.
Sanders has previously visited the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Jacksonville Jaguars and Kansas City Chiefs. He would be a perfect slot receiver target to open up the 49ers passing attack.
The Steelers free agent WR was originally a third round draft pick out of SMU in the 2010 NFL Draft. In four seasons with Pittsburgh, he has 2,030 receiving yards and 11 touchdown receptions.
