Report: Bethea leaves the game with a concussion

San Francisco 49ers S Antoine Bethea has been ruled out of the game with a concussion on Sunday afternoon in the team's second exhibition of the 2014 preseason against the Denver Broncos.

As a result of leaving with a concussion, Bethea will be forced to go through the NFL protocol in order to be cleared for practice and future games. On a short running play from C.J. Anderson, Bethea tripped and took an awkward fall on the ground.

In the offseason, the 49ers signed Bethea to a four-year, $21 million contract in the offseason which replaced SS Donte Whitner as h signed with the Cleveland Browns. Bethea was the starting safety for the Indianapolis Colts as he spent his first eight years in the league with them. He has played every regular-season game for the past six seasons.

Craig Dahl was inserted at strong safety to replace Bethea. He allowed a 17-yard touchdown to Julius Thomas four plays after coming in as a substitute.

Reserve safeties on the depth chart behind Bethea include Dahl, C.J. Spillman, Bubba Ventrone and D.J. Campbell. Other players who are not participating in this preseason game include NT Ian Williams and LB Patrick Willis.

Michael Crabtree, Aldon Smith, Vernon Davis, Anquan Boldin and Brandon Lloyd have all participated in this game after not playing the previous week.

Phil Dawson has two missed field goals thus far in the game while the Broncos have one field goal and the touchdown from Thomas. This is the first football game to take place in Levi's Stadium with one more preseason game remaining.
