The 49ers have signed LB Blake Costanzo to a one-year contract on Tuesday afternoon. In order to make room for Costanzo, the 49ers released OL Al Netter. Netter was a practice squad member of the 49ers in both the 2012 and 2013 seasons.
Costanzo has spent 2012 and 2013 with the Chicago Bears after he had an excellent 2011 season on special teams with the 49ers. He was the top special teams tackler for San Francisco in 2011 and the Chicago Bears in his two seasons with them.
On defense, Costanzo is an inside linebacker, where he joins a mix of Nick Moody, Chris Borland, Michael Wilhoite and Shayne Skov to help fill-in for NaVorro Bowman. For special teams, gone are LB Larry Grant and LB Tavares Gooden, but Costanzo will join core players including WR Kassim Osgood, S Bubba Ventrone, S C.J. Spillman and S Craig Dahl.
