The 49ers announced they have re-signed WR Kassim Osgood to a one year contract on Wednesday morning. He was originally on the team during the offseason but failed to make the final cut to 53 players.
Sixth-round draft pick LB Nick Moody was placed on the injured reserve / designated to return list after suffering a hand injury on Sunday. The rookie LB cannot practice with the team for six weeks and can only be activated eight weeks from now at the earliest.
With Osgood joining the team later, the 49ers saved themselves $940,000 which would have been guaranteed money had he been on the roster in Week 1. Because the veteran WR is taking Moody's spot on the roster, he will be expected to contributed on special teams. There are currently six other WRs on the roster with Osgood's addition. They are Anquan Boldin, Quinton Patton, Kyle Williams, Marlon Moore, Jon Baldwin and Chris Harper with the latter being a potential tight end project.
Mario Manningham and Michael Crabtree are both on the PUP list and could be activated as early as Week 6. Osgood was effective on both kickoff and punt return coverage units with an ability to get down the field quickly. He was a three-time Pro Bowler for his special teams achievements.
In the preseason, Osgood had only three receptions for 34 yards.
