The 49ers signed Chiefs defensive lineman Glenn Dorsey on Thursday afternoon. Dorsey and the 49ers agreed to a two-year contract and the team did not release financial terms.
Dorsey was a former fifth overall pick in the 2008 NFL Draft. He started as a DT before switching to a DE when the Kansas City Chiefs changed to a 3-4 defense. Dorsey was seldomly utilized at the NT position while in Kansas City.
His biggest strength will be stopping the run but was ineffective as a pass rusher. Dorsey could transition to nose tackle very quickly with his run stopping abilities. With the loss of Isaac Sopoaga to the Eagles and potentially losing Ricky Jean Francois, Dorsey has an opportunity to be the 49ers' starting NT. He is also capable of backing up Justin Smith or Ray McDonald as a DE.
