The 49ers have signed G Al Netter to a one-year contract on Monday afternoon. The signing of Netter fills up the 90-man roster to maximum total after the initial retirement of CB Eric Wright which left a void.
Netter, 24, was originally signed as an undrafted free agent out of Northwestern in 2012 where he joined the practice squad after being released. He was later released prior to the 2013 season where he briefly spent time with the Tennessee Titans practice squad. In Week 6, he was re-signed to the 49ers practice squad and remained there for the rest of the season.
Entering his third year with the NFL, Netter will provide competition among the guards which include Ryan Seymour and Joe Looney on the depth chart. With Alex Boone possibly holding out for a new contract, he could receive extra reps behind Mike Iupati and Adam Snyder. He is also eligible for the practice squad.
With Netter having experience the 49ers offense in the past, he would have the upper-hand on Seymour and better knowledge than Jonathan Martin. It is still an uphill battle for him to crack the 53-man roster.
At Northwestern, Netter earned Honorable Mention All-Big Ten and Academic All-Big Ten honors ion his senior year. He went to Cardinal Newman High School in Santa Rosa, Calif., where he was named First-Team All-North Coast Section and San Francisco Chronicle All-Metro.
With the addition of Netter, here is a projected look at the 49ers OL depth chart:
LT: Joe Staley, Jonathan Martin
LG: Mike Iupati, Adam Snyder
C: Daniel Kilgore, Marcus Martin, Dillon Farrell
RG: Alex Boone, Joe Looney, Ryan Seymour, Al Netter
RT: Anthony Davis, Carter Bykowski, Fou Fonoti
