The 49ers announced on Tuesday afternoon that they have promoted CB Darryl Morris from the practice squad to the 53-man roster. Morris takes Aldon Smith's spot, who was placed on the non-football injury list yesterday.
An undrafted free agent out of Texas State, the 5-10, 188 pound cornerback had a strong training camp against 49ers wide receivers and earned his way to the practice squad. Speed is his primarily specialty while his coverage skills improved in the final weeks of August.
Morris is expected to have a role on special teams with the recent injury to Bubba Ventrone. He adds to the depth at cornerback with Nnamdi Asomugha presumably doubtful for Thursday's game against the Rams.
Meanwhile, the 49ers signed LB D’Aundre Reed to the practice squad in Morris' place. Reed was a seventh round draft pick of the Vikings in 2011 and has played in six career games.
