The 49ers announced they have placed S Darcel McBath on the injured reserve on Thursday afternoon. McBath injured his foot on a punt return in Kansas City and was seen wearing a boot throughout practice this week.
McBath was a reserve safety last season who was mostly seen on special teams. He and Patrick Willis were responsible stopping a fake field goal attempt by the Ravens in the second quarter of the Super Bowl. Justin Tucker was tackled out of bounds short of the first down marker, which led to a turnover on downs. McBath was a former second-round pick of the Denver Broncos in 2009.
Taking his spot on the roster is LB Joe Holland, who was recently waived by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers earlier this week. Holland was initially with the 49ers as an undrafted free agent last season before being part of the final cut when the 2012 season began. He spent time on the practice squad for the Miami Dolphins and Buccaneers last year.
A big reason the 49ers signed a linebacker was because LB Nate Stupar has not been participating in practice this week with an undisclosed injury. Stupar has not been seen in action since the preseason game against Kansas City.
McBath becomes the fourth player on the injured reserve for the 49ers. He joins LB Darius Fleming, WR Brandon Carswell and FB Alex Debniak on this list.
