In an article on Sports Illustrated, 49ers head coach Jim Harbaugh made his case for Vic Fangio to get a raise. On Tuesday afternoon, he got his wish as Fangio was given a raise and one year extension, according to Matt Barrows.
Fangio and Harbaugh inherited an already above average defense prior to their arrival in 2011, but the defensive coordinator has made them become elite. In statistical yardage allowed, Fangio's defenses have been ranked in the top five for each of the last three seasons.
The 49ers defensive coordinator has continued to impress and has been responsible for the emergence of young players including NaVorro Bowman, Tramaine Brock and Aldon Smith. Fangio has also had full control of the OLB position for the defense.
Harbaugh's interview with Sports Illustrated talked about Fangio deserving more than he makes. He is now one of the highest paid assistants in the NFL.
"[Fangio] has not had a raise since he's been here," Harbaugh said. "Focus on that."
Fangio's contract now runs through the 2015 season, which is the same length as Jim Harbaugh's contract with the 49ers.
