The 49ers have claimed QB McLeod Bethel-Thompson off waivers from the Minnesota Vikings and released John Skelton on Wednesday afternoon, according to Brian McIntyre. The Vikings signed Josh Freeman yesterday and waived Bethel-Thompson as a result.
Undrafted out of Sacramento State, Bethel-Thompson spent training camp in 2011 competing for the third-string quarterback spot. He was cut before the season started and ended up signing with the Sacramento Mountain Lions in the now-defunct United Football League. Bethel-Thompson spent last season as the Vikings' third string quarterback.
Skelton was signed by the 49ers last week after they released seventh-round draft pick B.J. Daniels. He was one of seven inactive players for Sunday's game against the Houston Texans.
