Report: 49ers reward Bruce Miller with a three-year extension

The 49ers announced a three-year contract extension for FB Bruce Miller on Thursday afternoon. Miller was entering the final year of his rookie contract for the 2014 season.

Financial details of this extension haven't been released, but the 49ers fullback said the discussions for a new contract happened a few weeks ago.

"That was definitely [encouraging] and a positive. Being able to get the extension and have some security and have a place to call home for four more years,” Miller said in a conference call with the media on early talks with the team. “So when the talks first started about doing an extension, I was really excited about getting something done.”

This new deal makes Miller one of the highest paid fullbacks in the NFL, according to the report. Originally a seventh-round draft pick in 2011, he was originally a defensive end at UCF.

General Manager Trent Baalke had the following statement on this extension:

"Bruce is a hard-working, dedicated young player that has done an outstanding job for us, both on and off the field. He is one of those players that contributes a lot more to the team and to the community than he gets credit for, yet wouldn't have it any other way. We are pleased that Bruce has chosen to extend his stay with the 49ers."

Since being with the 49ers, he has established himself as one of the best FBs in the league as he has been responsible for the resurgence of Frank Gore. The 49ers have been one of the NFL's top rushing teams since Jim Harbaugh and his staff took over in the 2011 season.

Miller, 26, had 25 catches for 243 yards and seven carries for 13 yards in 14 games for the 2013 season. He suffered a broken scapula in Week 15 against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers as he was placed on the injured reserve.

With Miller being extended through the 2017 season, he is one of nine 49ers players under contract for four years or more. The other include S Antoine Bethea (through 2017), CB Tramaine Brock (2017), LB Ahmad Brooks (2017), OT Joe Staley (2017), OL Daniel Kilgore (2017), P Andy Lee (2018), LB NaVorro Bowman (2018) and OT Anthony Davis (2019).
