Report: 49ers reach agreement with K Phil Dawson

Cleveland Browns kicker Phil Dawson announced on Tuesday afternoon that he agreed to a deal with the 49ers. Dawson, 38 broke the news himself on his Twitter with the following statement:

I am humbled & thrilled to have the opportunity to continue my career with my new team, the SF 49ers!

The 49ers parted ways with placekicker David Akers after he struggled throughout the 2012 season. He made only 69 percent of his field goal attempts and missed two potential winning field goals in overtime in two different games against the St. Louis Rams.

Dawson made 29 of 31 attempts during the 2012 season. One of his misses was a blocked field goal attempt against the Oakland Raiders in Week 13 while the other was a 39-yard attempt that sailed wide right against the Pittsburgh Steelers in Week 17. For his efforts, he was named the AFC Pro Bowl kicker and a 2nd team All-Pro last year.

Over the last two years, Dawson made 14 out of 15 attempts from 50 yards or more. He has converted 53 of 60 attempts from 2011 and 2012 combined.

The signing reunites Dawson with his former special teams coach Brad Seely who spent 2009 and 2010 with him in Cleveland.
