Dial, a fifth round draft pick in the 2013 NFL Draft suffered a turf toe and remained on the non-football injury list throughout the offseason.
Current starting NT Glenn Dorsey suffered a hamstring injury in last Sunday's 32-20 win over the Arizona Cardinals. With this move, it looks like Dorsey will be limited as Tony Jerod-Eddie and Dial will get majority of the playing time at NT. DE Tank Carradine and RB Marcus Lattimore are the remaining rookies from the 2013 draft class who are on the Non-football injury list.
Dial should be in rotation with Jerod-Eddie at NT for Sunday's game against the Titans. The nose tackle position receives about 33 percent of the defensive snaps with the 49ers operating mostly on nickel and dime defense.
Patrick Willis said both Carradine and Dial have been working well since they started practicing this week. He expects both players to make an impact in the future.
"It's amazing to see how [both players] are working hard," Willis said on Thursday. "Coaches stand on top of them from conditioning to getting back on the field. Those guys are [going] to come in and play now and make a difference for us. They're good kids and they work hard. We hope to implement them in the defense."
