The 49ers announced they made their second transaction in free agency by trading a sixth-round pick to the Jacksonville Jaguars for Blaine Gabbert.

With the 49ers depth at quarterback in question, this is the second consecutive year the team trades for a backup quarterback. In 2013, the 49ers traded a fifth and seventh-round pick for Colt McCoy and a sixth-round pick.

Originally a Missouri Tiger, Blaine Gabbert was taken 10th overall in the 2011 NFL Draft as the 49ers passed on him for college teammate Aldon Smith with the seventh overall pick. Gabbert was drafted 26 spots before Colin Kaepernick was selected at 36th overall in the second round.

In 2013, Gabbert lost the starting QB job to Chad Henne and went 5-22 as a starting quarterback. In his final three games Gabbert had one touchdown pass and seven interceptions.

Gabbert will be the backup quarterback behind Colin Kaepernick for the 2014 season. The only other QB under contract is McLeod Bethel-Thompson, who was signed in the middle of the 2013 season before being cut and placed on the practice squad. He currently has a $2 million cap hit for the 2014 season.
