Rep. Peter DeFazio, a Democrat from Oregon recently spoke the truth about our national debt, budget and priorities when he addressed the House of Representatives. He pointed out the hypocrisy of the Republican budget cutters who have exempted many programs, but in particular the military. Check out the video to see his full statement.
Fifty years ago, President Dwight D. Eisenhower warned us that the entity he labeled the “military industrial complex” would be the greatest cause for concern we face, and Rep. DeFazio’s statement echoes Eisenhower’s warning. Following the cultural trend toward more accountability and less military spending, DeFazio said,
“The Pentagon is the only agency of the federal government that can’t be audited . . . and we’re going to exempt them from scrutiny and cuts.”
In other words, government continues to allow the military (and the corporations who profit from their activities) run rampant while 100,000 people die of starvation every day on this planet. We’re still willing to spend billions for weaponry while allocating little for what Buckminster Fuller labeled “livingry.”
DeFazio also noted that Republicans plant to do nothing about closing corporate tax loopholes, but President Obama and the Democrats are favoring the same policy of supporting weaponry and corporations (the military industrial complex again) over average human beings. In other words, all politicians are still missing (or denying) the reality that war is obsolete and that corporations are ruining our society.
May we all soon awaken to the fact that our best chance for survival and success as a species lies in a shift from weaponry to livingry.
