Democratic U.S. Congressman Luis Gutierrez of Illinois was arrested in front of the White House in Washington, D.C. this afternoon during a protest regarding the deportation of illegal immigrants.
After two warnings by the U.S. Park Police to keep moving, Gutierrez still sat and refused to move from an area that is designated for persons to keep moving. The congressman, with approximately a dozen protesters in his company, displayed a banner reading: 1 million deportations under Obama.
The Chicago congressman was fined $100 and released. Other persons of note engaged in the protest were Gustavo Torres who is the executive director of CASA de Maryland and Deepak Bhargava who is the executive director of the Center for Community Change.
Gutierrez has previously and repeatedly encourage Latinos to not support President Barack Obama if he doesn’t do more regarding immigration reform. Additionally, the congressman has been arrested once before for a similar protest in 2010.
The events are reminiscent of fellow-Chicagoan Rev. Jesse Jackson, Jr.’s style of protesting. The style being protest, break a minor law, get released, hit the headlines with their cause.
