Rent-A-Gent: A new service for women to hire handsome men to help with chores

According to ABC News on Tuesday, there is a service called Rent-A-Gent that women can use. Starting at $200 an hour, women can pick from a list of handsome, intelligent men listed on the service’s website to be their companion and either book online or call to reserve a “gent.” The men can serve as a date to an event, cook meals, repair a sink, help with children or run errands. However, the gents are not allowed to have sex or even kiss while on the job.

Rent-A-Gent offers services in eleven states and the District of Columbia. Sara Shikhman, the co-founder and CEO of Rent-A-Gent says the interview process is extensive. She said she and a panel of judges will conduct 80 to 100 interviews before they find one man acceptable for hire. Then they carefully select each gent in casting sessions, weeding out many of those who audition, and then they select the best of the best. Women can browse through the online database and choose a gent based on his profile. There are three major characteristics the gents must have. They must be handsome. They must be intelligent. They must have a talent.

During the audition, Shikhman has the men show off their bodies, sometimes asking them to take off their shirt, and demonstrate their talent, whether it’s plumbing or dancing. Shikhman emphasizes that Rent-A-Gent is far from being a sex service.

About 150 women have used the service with a “100 percent happiness guarantee.” This means that if aren't completely satisfied with the service, they will receive a full refund.

According to the New York Post, relationship expert Donna Barnes believes the downside of this service is that while this one-and-done date seems like a fun solution to typical dating, hiring a companion could hurt women’s chances at finding real love. She says, "By hiring someone who is attractive, you start holding up this standard. You might overlook someone who is really wonderful and could make you happy.”
