Instead of making resolutions for the New Year, why don’t we remove the “re” from resolutions and focus on solutions in 2013? Yes, that’s right, focus on the solutions. Each resolution is your WHAT. To convert your resolution to your solutions, we need to focus on your HOW and WHY. Simon Sinek has an excellent presentation on WHAT, HOW and WHY at http://youtu.be/qp0HIF3SfI4.
Likely the most common resolution is losing weight. Ok, that’s great, but this is your WHAT. The HOW begins with these questions. How much weight do you want to lose? How long do you want to take—be realistic? You won’t lose 2 pounds a day, but over a 3-month period, you can realistically lose 10 pounds.
How also includes your solution to accomplish this? We can set up a resolution to lose weight, but unless we have a plan of action, we will fail our resolution. Do you plan to exercise at home for 30 minutes four times a week? Do you plan to reduce you food intake, i.e. diet? Do you plan to join a bike group? Do you plan to join a gym? Do you plan to walk around the block for 30 minutes a day? Or do you plan to combine two or three plans of action?
Do you plan to do this all by yourself (a very difficult task)? Do you plan to partner up with someone or at least be accountable to someone? What about a phone app? There are several Go to your appropriate phone app web site and search for “exercise,” “exercise tracker,” “nutrition,” “diet,” “diet tracker,” or a bunch of others related to health, nutrition, and exercises. I use Runtastic which tracks how much I walk (or run), calories burned, average pace and speed, and your pulse rate. You do have to check your own pulse rate, but the app will track it. Oh yes, you can get your pulse rate and check your heart with the Cardiograph app.
As Simon Sinek states in his presentation, the most important is your WHY. Why do you want to lose weight? Are you always tired? Do you have an illness like a heart problem like I do? Do you want to do it for your children? Determine your why and write it down. When you are struggling to maintain your HOW, concentrate on your WHY. Your HOW will then be much easier to complete.
Wishing you and yours a very healthy and wealthy New Year in 2013.
