Deuteronomy 11:18-21 (NLT)
“So commit yourselves wholeheartedly to these words of mine. Tie them to your hands and wear them on your forehead as reminders. Teach them to your children. Talk about them when you are at home and when you are on the road, when you are going to bed and when you are getting up. Write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates, so that as long as the sky remains above the earth, you and your children may flourish in the land the LORD swore to give your ancestors.”
Commit yourselves wholeheartedly to these words of mine. Tie them to your hands so each and every action will be committed to the Lord. Wear them on your forehead so that others will see them in what you do before you tell them. Teach them to your children by living out the Word in your home – watching what is not offensive to God, speaking the Word over them and living out the Gospel before them while encouraging and engaging in the written Word of God. Talk about them in your home making it a peaceful refuge wrapped in the Word and filled with His Spirit. When you are at work speak words of encouragement based on His Word and respond to others as God would rather as a reaction. Read and pray the Word before you go to bed. Get up early to dive back in moving deeper into God’s Presence. Make His Truth and Promises the foundation of your home even if it means taking a pen or pencil writing them there. Mark the borders of your territory with a careful warning to the enemy that this is God’s Promised Land for His People – No Trespassing! If you commit yourselves “wholeheartedly” to God’s Word, you AND your children will flourish in the Promises and Blessings that He has already designated as your inheritance as His Child. Let’s break it down. To commit means to give in trust or charge. It is to make a binding pledge to the Lord. To become obligate to a real-life relationship entering a true covenant with God. You are promising to be the Bride of Jesus Christ and submit to the Body of Christ. To flourish means to be successful and to prosper. I really do not think there is much more of an explanation needed here. So tie it up with a bow and it reads like this – If I commit myself wholeheartedly to God’s Word – I will be successful.
In Deuteronomy, it says, “Tie them to your hands and wear them on your foreheads as a reminder.” It is impossible to live a righteous life that is pleasing to God outside of His Word. Jesus Christ is the Word that became flesh to live among us and demonstrate God’s Word for our life. (John 1:14) The world is starving for the Word of God and so is the church of Jesus Christ. It is impossible to commit our life wholeheartedly to Jesus Christ apart from His Word or you miss the total package. Jesus told the woman at the well, “True worshippers will worship in Spirit and Truth” foretelling His Death and the release of His Spirit to live in the hearts of all mankind. (John 4:23) This is of vital importance. People innately struggle with sin and despite their best intentions to obey God’s Law – everyone has fallen short of God’s Standard subjecting us all to the death penalty. (Romans 3:23) Even after the Death and Resurrection of our Lord and Savior there is a warning of falling short of His Glory again pointing back to the human heart rather than what we do and say. (Hebrews 12:14-16) You can fall short of God’s Grace by never allowing the true meaning of faith and grace to capture your heart and transform its intentions and motives into alignment with God’s Love. The point of God’s Word was not to restrict us but to free us to live the life that God intended for us to have because God is Love! But we viewed it as oppressive and have tried every possible to have the best of both worlds. His Grace is enough. The Law of God is too much for us so we compromise and settle for less. Of course, we do. That is the whole point of God wrapping His Word in flesh to come and demonstrate the overpowering, overwhelming and overflowing Love of the Father so everyone would return to Him. Somehow, the people missed it again. Now with grace we excuse disobedience and return to the darkness claiming the Light of God’s Love. He loves you there is no doubt. Jesus Christ did not come to abolish God’s Law but to accomplish it. He overcame the stumbling block of sin and death that kept us from making our home in Heaven. Now whosoever will may come…this is simply a reminder.
John 14:23-27 (NLT)
Jesus replied, “All who love me will do what I say. My Father will love them, and we will come and make our home with each of them. Anyone who doesn’t love me will not obey me. And remember, my words are not my own. What I am telling you is from the Father who sent me. I am telling you these things now while I am still with you. But when the Father sends the Advocate as my representative—that is, the Holy Spirit—he will teach you everything and will remind you of everything I have told you. “I am leaving you with a gift—peace of mind and heart. And the peace I give is a gift the world cannot give. So don’t be troubled or afraid.
All who love me will do what I say. Omission is a lie. To simply choose to remain ignorant of God’s Law and commandments in His Word gives no one an excuse not to do the right thing with the right heart. Why? The Holy Spirit removes all excuses. The Helper has come to all who call on the Name of Jesus Christ to be present at all times in His People. The Spirit teaches you things and brings to remembrance God’s Word to empower and motivate you to successfully find all the blessings and promises of God hidden in your life. That’s right – there is provision already existent in your life according to God’s Word. He recorded every minute of your life before you were born and has provided all you need to be successful in it. It doesn’t matter where you came from but it does matter where you are going. The moment you choose to obey God’s Word and allow His Spirit to lead you – you will have the life that God promised you. But many people have no idea what that is because they have not taken time to get to know the Word. You cannot have the Spirit of God without the Word (Jesus Christ). The Word identifies who Jesus Christ is and what He came to do in your life. If you know the Son, you will know the Father because they are One. Intimacy is more than just a casual acquaintance. It requires a personal investment and yielding. God’s Spirit is an intimate connection with God but remains a stranger to most believers. To find peace in our life requires a connection with the Word of God and Spirit of God inside of us. It settles our heart. Our heart will become committed to the Lord OR it will remain committed to this world. Religious people can think they are saved by grace but not be saved at all. Repentance is turning our heart back to and over to God by faith. We entrust all that we are to the Word – Jesus Christ. Religion is a return to the Law of God but does not necessarily represent a transformation of the heart. God does not want us to simply do the right things. He is looking at the human heart examining every motive that He finds there. When our commitment to the Lord becomes wholehearted meaning it is all in response to His Love rather than fear of death suddenly we begin to thrive and prosper in the Word. Peace overtakes the chaos of our life and home.
My grandmother was an avid letter writer. In an age that lacked technology other than the telephone, she would send me letters each one telling me whatever news there might be but mostly filled with her great love for me. Some contained correction that I needed to hear but might not have listened to if she had tried to tell me. Some had words of wisdom provoked by God’s Spirit although she had no idea that it was there. When I was very young, something inside me told me to save all those letters and I did including a few emails that she sent at the end of her life. Now that my grandmother is no longer here with me, I have all of her words wrapped up in letters that I read when I need to hear her voice. I miss her very much. Her letters serve as a reminder of her love for me. God’s Word is a constant reminder of how much He loves me and all the ways that the Lord longs to prosper my life if I will just do things His Way. The Word of God is His Love letter to us! It contains all the things that He wants us to know to have a successful life. It tells us how to achieve it. It is not a rigid list of rules and regulations to those who get to know the Word and fall in love with Him, too. Sometimes we need a reminder to remain wholehearted in our pursuit of prosperity.
Proverbs 7:1-3 (NLT)
Follow my advice, my son; always treasure my commands. Obey my commands and live! Guard my instructions as you guard your own eyes. Tie them on your fingers as a reminder. Write them deep within your heart.
Obedience to God is an act of consecration. It is holy. It cannot be something that we merely do but must come from a heart with the right intentions. If you are simply chasing the Lord for what He has in His Hand, you will experience the blessing found in the perimeter of God and the overflow of others. But until you step into righteousness, you will never experience the fullness of God’s Love for you which will cause your life to flourish. If your blessing is contingent or dependent on anyone or anything other than the Lord, it is not your inheritance. God has promises that belong to you – His Child that are reserved expressly for you and will come to pass no matter what is going on in the world or with the people around you. Those who trust and rely solely on Jesus Christ living in a relationship with Him will be blessed and prosper no matter what the circumstances or situations around them appear to be. Impossible outcomes are going to come to pass because God’s Word is working in their life. God’s Word works for those who live a life of peace of mind and heart that only comes from agreement with the Word. Time the Word to your fingers means to commit everything you do to God which of course there are some things you just are not going to do anymore and you will succeed. (Proverbs 16:3) Stop working harder and work smarter. The Holy Spirit will teach you God’s Way which transfers the load of burdens, worries and care from your shoulders to the His Massive Strength. (Matthew 11:28) Trouble is we don’t know God’s True Intentions for us because we are ignorant of His Word which means we also do not trust Jesus Christ so we choose to continue to carry our own burdens and struggle through life all the while trying to be obedient to God and failing miserably because our heart and mind do not agree so there is no peace! Write the Word deep within your heart and your mind will change as your soul prospers so will you! (2 John 1:2)
Matthew 5:17-19 (NLT)
“Don’t misunderstand why I have come. I did not come to abolish the Law of Moses or the writings of the prophets. No, I came to accomplish their purpose. I tell you the truth, until heaven and earth disappear, not even the smallest detail of God’s law will disappear until its purpose is achieved. So if you ignore the least commandment and teach others to do the same, you will be called the least in the Kingdom of Heaven. But anyone who obeys God’s laws and teaches them will be called great in the Kingdom of Heaven.”
The motivation and intention of our heart is God’s Primary Focus. In the midst of flourishing religion, His People missed the point of the Law. They kept on sinning and then just paid it off with animals not realizing that God’s Eyes were looking past the altar and into their heart. Each sin was weighed against the motivation of their heart. Jesus Christ did not abolish the Law but accomplished it. His Spirit has come to make room so that Jesus Christ can live in our heart and transform us into Living Sacrifices that give up sin on the altar not just meaningless sacrifice. We must give up those things that keep us from putting our whole life on the Altar of God. The rich young ruler grew up in the habit of religion but could not give up the life that he knew and all of its comforts to serve Jesus Christ. (Matthew 19:17-21) Is that you today? If you love Jesus Christ wholeheartedly you do exactly what His Word says motivated by His Great Love that is now inside of you? The right action must have the right attitude to make it worthy of being acceptable to the Lord. (Matthew 5:21-22; 27-28; 31-32; 33-37; 38-42; 43-48) You can memorize the entire Bible cover to cover but if it is not your intent to apply His Love (cover to cover) to your life than there really is no point. Before Jesus Christ no matter how much we loved God, sin prevented people from successfully serving Him because even the most obedient people still sinned and were subject to death. After Jesus, His Grace allows us to serve God and prosper because even when we fall short God can look past what is covered by the Blood to see the intentions and motives of our heart. If He sees that we are wholeheartedly committed to loving and serving Him, mission accomplished.
Titus 2:12-14 (NLT)
And we are instructed to turn from godless living and sinful pleasures. We should live in this evil world with wisdom, righteousness, and devotion to God, while we look forward with hope to that wonderful day when the glory of our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ, will be revealed. He gave his life to free us from every kind of sin, to cleanse us, and to make us his very own people, totally committed to doing good deeds.
God is reminding us today the importance of His Word. The Word is Jesus Christ. The written word tells the Love Story of His Passion for His People and is well worth reading as it describes His Great Love for us revealing all the promises that He has made in His Covenant with His Beloved. It is important to know God’s Word because it explains His Covenant and the greatest part that in a time when people forget the vows they make to each just after leaving the altar – God’s Love for you will never change. He does not lie so when the Lord tells you if you do this, I will do this it is etched in stone and will never change. (Numbers 23:17) The Covenant of God for your life stands unchanged no matter how far you fall short or how deep in the wilderness you wander – the Lord is always prepared for your return. (Psalm 105:7-8) We are instructed to turn from godless living and sinful pleasures not to limit our life but so that we can live in wisdom, righteousness and devotion to God. These are not thoughtless but intentional. Faith comes by hearing the Word of God. Hope is produced when we believe it. This is a reminder from the Lord today to cause us to remember just how much He loves us. It is a reminder that should make us think about getting to know Him more in His Word. It is a reminder to make us aware of something previously known and perhaps have forgotten when all hell broke loose in our life. Whatever the case, God is reminding you today that He loves you! You will find this in His Word and confirmed by His Spirit! The Word of God is the kindling for a passionate fire for the Lord. His Spirit is the wind that fans the flame increasing its intensity. This powerful combination will always produce prosperity in our life.
2 Timothy 1:5-7 (NLT)
I remember your genuine faith, for you share the faith that first filled your grandmother Lois and your mother, Eunice. And I know that same faith continues strong in you. This is why I remind you to fan into flames the spiritual gift God gave you when I laid my hands on you. For God has not given us a spirit of fear and timidity, but of power, love, and self-discipline.
