As one of only four independent republics to join the United States, Texas shares a fairly unique history. It was with the idea of preserving this unique history that the Daughters of the Republic of Texas was formed in 1891. This lineage society seeks to “perpetuate forever the memory of the Texas pioneer families and soldiers of the Republic of Texas by forming an association of their descendants” (Daughters of the Republic of Texas website)
The genealogical information from the DRT’s membership applications can be an invaluable source for anyone researching Texas pioneers. The DRT can provide record searches and paper copies of applications and proofs of active, deceased, and resigned members for a nominal fee. For more information about the request procedure, please contact Daughters of the Republic of Texas Headquarters at (512) 339-1997.
Familysearch.org has also digitalized the association’s membership applications from 1892 through 2010. The digital collection is not indexed and will take some time to properly search. However, be patient. The membership applications contain information about land ownership, occupations and of course lineage.
