Parenting is the toughest job you will ever love. Mother’s Day is almost here again. While Moms certainly enjoy having a special day of recognition, most Moms I know appreciate a hug, kiss, homemade memento or kind words as much as an extravagant gift.
A Mom’s pride in her children is global. So it seems worthy to note that “mama” is almost universal baby “speak” for Mother as children are developing language acquisition. It is one of the truly worldwide sounds. That seems very appropriate considering Mothers are so important in a child’s life.
Mothers share similar experiences, some that are quite wonderful and others that are much less so! What Mom does not get teary eyed when she remembers her child’s first words and first steps? How about that hollow feeling on that first day of kindergarten? What about that pride and wonder as Mom watches that first dance/music/singing recital? Or watching with delight as her child scores that basket or touchdown? And especially that emotional moment as she watches her “baby” marches down the aisle at Graduation?
Moms have sat up all night with a feverish or vomiting child. They become accustomed to the smell of spit up (and get pretty creative at covering up that smell). What Mom has not stepped on tiny Barbie shoes/ marbles/ toy soldiers barefoot? She also sometimes wonders where all of those dirty clothes came from. Moms have gotten up at 5:30 AM to take her child to meet the band/sports bus. She has fished disgusting objects out of her child’s jean pockets before washing them. She has wiped away grime with her own spit or sat up all night finishing a Halloween costume. And then there are the times she has baked three dozen cupcakes for the school bake sale on impossibly short notice.
Motherhood is definitely not for the faint of heart. Luckily, the special moments and wonderful memories far outweigh the trying times.
The one gift most Moms enjoy best is the gift of time with her children. Take a ride to the beach or a lovely garden, make her dinner, or just visit and reminisce. Just remember to sit up straight and mind your manners. Once a Mom, always a Mom!!
A very blessed Mother’s Day to all!
