San Diego will celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. Day on Monday, January 20th. A holiday for many businesses in San Diego, Martin Luther King Jr. Day is recognized as a tribute to a man who fought for the freedom and unity of all people.

Although he was killed before realizing his dream, the ideas that he put in motion live on today. Goals of equality, peaceful protest, unity and a world without prejudice started a revolution in America and around the world that influenced change in civil rights laws.

A Baptist Minister, Dr. King was the youngest person to receive the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964. He was also awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1977.

Born in Atlanta, Georgia, Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated in 1968. He was laid to rest at Martin Luther King Jr. Historic Site. His head stone reads "Free at Last, Free at Last. Thank God Almighty I'm Free at Last".
