Remembering George Bailey

Do you remember George Bailey? No, not the ‘It’s a Wonderful Life’ George Bailey, but the abandoned seven-year-old feline dismissed so easily on Christmas Eve at the Helen Woodward Animal Center (HWAC) in California. The good news is that this kitty has quickly become an international celebrity. He is now ready for his own personal ‘wonderful life!’

Currently George is receiving some overwhelming attention at HWAC. On Christmas Eve, he was left is a small crate alongside the equine stables in the early morning hours. At the time, the domestic short-haired feline’s prospects looked pretty grim! The former owner had left only a note of apology that he no longer had the resources to care for his devoted pet. Center staff renamed the affectionate cat George Bailey after the lead character in the holiday film; It’s a Wonderful Life, hoping to find an angelic adopter to prove to this abandoned cat that his life had meaning after all.

Like the beloved character in the Frank Capra classic, an angel does indeed seem to be looking out for George Bailey. His tragic story was picked up by People Pets, an off-shoot of People Magazine, and the neglected feline is now an international celebrity. His write up and accompanying video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w7Yj0omkyGE&feature=youtu.be) were viewed by over 100,000 on-line animal-lovers with inquiries, comments, well-wishes and “likes” coming from such far away states as Florida and Maine and such far away countries as Australia and the United Kingdom. One Florida fan wrote, “Your wonderful new life is just beginning George Bailey. Everything happens for a reason and someone is just waiting to scoop you up.....with love from Florida...”

In order to ensure his wonderful life, HWAC had Veterinarian Dr. Stephanie Oba check George out completely. He had every health check and procedure required to be deemed adoption-ready. This included a full dental which revealed he required an extraction.

George has since healed physically and emotionally after his year-end escapades and is at last fully recovered. This kitty is currently ready to settle into his wonderful new life and is hoping that a real-life angel will step forward to provide him with a loving home.

He has tons of love to give and deserves a guardian angel of his very own. For more information on George, or to adopt George, please contact the Adoptions Department at: 858-756-4117 ext. 1, visit www.animalcenter.org or stop by at 6461 El Apajo Road in Rancho Santa Fe.
