Brooklyn native, singer, song-writer, actress, and model Aaliyah Dana Haughton, known to the world by her stage name "A-a-l-i-y-a-h," was a beautiful, talented, R& B singer who was at the peak of her career, when she sadly died in a tragic plane crash on August 25, 2001 along with eight others in The Bahamas after filming the music video for her single "Rock the Boat".
She had many Billboard chart-topping hit singles in the 90's with hits like: Age Ain't Nothin' But a Number, One in A Million, 4 Page Letter, At Your Best, Are You That Somebody, Rock the Boat and the list goes on and on. She definitely made her mark in her 22 years and we must keep her legacy alive and going strong today.
It's hard to believe she has been gone for 9 years, if she were alive today she would be 31. (The day she died was a milestone in my life. It was my first year of college at Middle Tennessee State University.)Thinking back, I recollect having her poster for her last album ironically titled "Aaliyah" posted in my dorm room. ( I was in my dorm room when I found out she had passed and recall shedding a few tears and not wanting to believe she had died fatally in a plane crash. I mean it felt like I had just watched her on 106 and Park with Free and AJ and her MTV special..and within a blink of an eye she was gone so soon. A week later, I did my first speech on Aaliyah for my introduction to speech class.)
Growing up in the 90's , when the R&B and hip hop era were complementing each other like a glove, I loved Aaliyah's warm, loving, humble yet shy personality. Her lyrics and dance moves were always on time! ( I remember watching her videos and learning her dance routines. Fun times!) And who could ever forget, her STYLE! She definitely set the trend with her baggy Tommy Hilfiger jeans and her signature tube top which fit her model frame perfectly and of course let us not forget her HAIR! ( Correct me if I'm wrong..but everybody wanted to duplicate her long, black, hair with the swoop over the eye! It was a must-have hairstyle when I was in school.)
I encourage her fans, supporters, music lovers, or anyone that comes to my page to check out this special tribute to Aaliyah. I have some of my favorite songs, videos, and photos of Aaliyah here:
