80s slang words were born from many different things such as movies, commercials, music, valley girls and hot surfer dudes. Anytime there were teens around you were sure to hear at least a few of these words being used in the 80s. Teens these days get a kick out of hearing some of the words that their parents use to use...or maybe still use!
Where's the Beef
This slang saying was born from a Wendy's hamburger commercial where granny wasn't happy with the small portion of burger that she received. Where's the beef would be used when something important was missing from any situation.
Take a Chill Pill
Back in the 80s when someone was freaking out or stressing it was not uncommon for someone to tell them to take a chill pill.
Like
Like would have to be considered one of the most common slang terms used in the 80s. Like it was like used several times in like almost every sentence for some people.
Barf me Out or Gag me with a Spoon
These phrases were used in response to anything that was gross or offensive.
Tubular, Gnarly and Totally
Tubular and gnarly were used to described something that was cool or good. And if it was really cool or good then totally would be added before it to stress just how cool it really was. For example:That concert was totally gnarly!
Even though many of these words are not commonly used these days, it is great to look back on the popular slang terms that many of us used during the 80s.
