Molly (Bledel) is a lonely, down-on-her-luck waitress who is also a college student with dreams of opening her own flower shop. She meets Gus (Levi) at the restaurant, and again when she goes into the jewelry store where he works.
The two have chemistry but Gus behaves strangely and Molly is mystified by him. The viewer learns that Gus used to be a brilliant young astrophysicist but he lost his short term memory after a brain aneurism three years earlier. Every day is like a new day to Gus, who has to record notes to himself because he has no memory of the day before, or the days before that. He even has to leave himself post-it notes to remind him that he lives in New Orleans.
While Molly’s intrigued by Gus, she also finds herself miffed when he forgets dates and behaves strangely. Gus comes across as absent minded and preoccupied. Molly wonders is there is another woman or he is harboring a big secret in his life.
Gus does have a big secret and it takes encouragement from his sister (Merritt Weaver) and friend to tell Molly the truth. Every day he sees Molly he struggles to remember who she is and what she represents. Every day, he has to fall in love with her all over again.
Eventually, Molly learns the truth about Gus and she is optimistic that she she can live with reminding him who she is daily. When Molly comes into some money, she takes Gus to Los Angeles where she meets his former co-workers and gets a glimpse of his previous life. Molly starts to understand that a relationship with Gus would be even more difficult then she imagined.
